Dining out with the family takes on a whole different level once baby starts solids. Where nursing cover or milk bottles and formula powder once occupied your diaper bag, the list grows now. You’ll have to bring along baby’s food, water bottle and bib too. This is when you’ll begin to think of the best ways to pack baby’s food.
Let’s explore some food options that are easy to pack and nutritious for baby to enjoy when we dine out:
- Iron-fortified cereal such as oats and barley
- Mashed legumes such as black beans, chickpeas, edamame, fava beans, black-eyed peas, lentils and kidney beans
- Mashed tofu
- Pasteurized cheese strips and cottage cheese
- Mashed or bite-size fruits such as banana, peach, pear, avocado, carrot, squash, potato, sweet potato)
- Bite-size vegetables such as peas and carrot (soft-cooked)
- Scrambled eggs
- Spiral pasta (soft-cooked), macaroni & cheese, casseroles
The next concern may be, how do we keep the hot food warm, and the cold food chilled? When you’re at home, it’s easy to heat up food using a steamer or microwave – although we highly recommend using the former due to the reported side effects of using the latter. When out and about, you can either pack baby’s food in containers that are small enough to be heated up in a food warmer, or you can opt to serve the food as it is to baby – especially if it’s a cold food (fruits, cereal, cheese etc).
Another good alternative is investing in a good insulated food jar. Suitable to retain the temperature of cold or warm food up to 4 hours, these jars are portable, keep baby’s food fresh and come in cute designs. Check these out:
