4. When talking to our child, please do not lecture them. Speak in short sentences, especially for preschoolers. And try to put demands in the positive. For example, say ‘walk’ instead of ‘don’t run’. – Ana CT Ani

5. The most important lesson you can give to your child, no matter how young they are, is that they are always capable of doing anything, just as you show them they are capable of sitting, and walking. The same goes for everything else in life. – Esther YS Ling

6. Always tell your child you love him/ her. Many times a day! For no reason! No matter how old they are! No matter if they cringe in return or not. – Sharon Goh

7. Let children to drink breast milk until two years old as breastfed kids are relatively more healthy and we save money from buying milk powder. 11. Our role as parents is not to ensure our kids are happy. It’s to prepare them to find their own happiness. So it’s good to let kids fail. They will learn how to cope when things don’t go their way, and gain the self-confidence to try new things, and go for it. – Easter Wong

12. Let it go! We parents have to learn to let go, so that they could learn all by themselves. We are here just to guide them and not owned them. – Chan Yu Chin

13. When we were kids, we used to learn that, if we ever got lost (say, in a department store), we should find a policeman for help. But how often is a policeman present? Instead, I should tell my kid she should look for a mum with children, since it’s more likely that the person could help. It makes a lot more sense to me! – Tan Aik Guan

14. Instead of using an electric thermos to make hot milk for baby, invest in a good portable thermos that is able to keep warm for 6-8 hours. It saves electricity. Use hot boiling water to sterilise milk bottles or baby feeding items instead of buying a steriliser. It works the same way in killing harmful germs. – Katelynn Kayley Low

15. Teach them to be grateful as we were told to be grateful to all those who had helped us. – Sk Lim

Safer Skincare For Children

It smells nice. It feels good on your child’s skin. And most of your friends are using it on their kids too. But is it the healthiest and safest choice?

When it comes to getting shampoos, lotions, and other personal care products for your children – or giving them guidance on making the right choice – it’s not always easy. The presence of chemicals like phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde found in many skincare products can be detrimental when used in the long term.

Unlike adults, babies’ skin is thinner, more fragile and sensitive. It is also less resistant to bacteria and harmful substances in the environment, making it easily irritated. From mums to mums, here’s what we look for when choosing a skincare product for our little ones:

  1. Read the label – Investigate the product. Try to understand what goes into the bottle. The more ingredients you can pronounce, the better it is. If you see words with parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petroleum, fragrances and the likes, consider something else. Most importantly, read up the brand you’re buying from and make sure it’s a trusted company.
  1. Shop at specialty stores – Most of the healthier, safer range of products are available in specialty stores.
  2. Rate your products – Visit the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database and type in your product. You’ll discover the rating for the hazard level of that brand. This will serve as a good starting point as to which of your current products may not be completely safe.

Always avoid these ingredients for children and when possible, for adults too:

  • Fragrance – Many fragrance ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma; some linked to cancer and neurotoxicity and hormone disruption.
  • Fluoride – Stains teeth and neurotoxic when swallowed.
  • Ceteareth & PEG compounds (e.g. PEG -60) – Used in some cosmetic cream bases and can be contaminated with impurities, e.g. 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer.
  • Triethanolamine (TEA) – Allergen that forms cancer-causing chemicals.
  • Benzyl & Isopropyl Alcohol and Methylchloroisothiazolinone & Methylisothiazolinone – Irritant/allergen and neurotoxicity concerns
  • Iodopropynylbutylcarbamate – Chemically similar to neurotoxic pesticides
  • DEA-related ingredients – Used in some creamy and foaming products, such as moisturizers and shampoos. Can react to form nitrosamines, which may cause cancer.
  • Petrolatum – Used in some hair products for shine and as a moisture barrier in some lip balms, lip sticks and moisturizers. Can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which may cause cancer.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives – Used in a variety of cosmetics. Slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde, which causes cancer.
  • Siloxanes – Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten. Suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane).
  • Sodium laureth (or lauryl) sulfate – Used in some foaming cosmetics, such as shampoos, cleansers and bubble bath. Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer.

8 Ways To Have The Most Amazing Year!

With every new year, comes renewed hopes and optimism. While we are not actually a big fan of New Year’s resolutions (because resolutions are wishful thinking and usually fade away as the months shuffle ahead), we are all in for positive vibes and creating new habits.

Here are eight actions that can help to pave the path to an amazing 2016:

  1. Create new habits. Having goals are great, but it’s realistically tough to manage so many new goals especially when you have a daily schedule to juggle. Establish one new habit that you have been wanting to inculcate. Focus on it and give it your full attention until it becomes a natural thing. Then begin another new habit. The key is to work on one habit at a time. Who knows, by end of the year, you could have 10-12 new habits, making closer to any goals you might have wanted to reach. Some habits you can look into include meditation, healthy eating, decluteering, exercise, learning/studying, debt reduction, gratitude and letting go.
  2. Make self-care a priority. Be extra nice to yourself. Nurture yourself. After all, you can’t take care of anybody else very well if you don’t take care of yourself first. And, the world needs you! Be sure to love and nurture yourself with everything that requires attention to ensure a healthy, contented and happy you. You can do so by focusing on various aspects such as your physical fitness, health, mental well-being, spirituality, relationship, finances, career and personal goals.
  3. Make a list of what you can do to make these things better. For the things you cannot change, simply let them go. There’s no point dwelling and letting them be a setback to a good year. Don’t let unpleasant memories have control over your happiness.
  4. Help others. When you give, you receive in triple fold. When you lend a helping hand to others, you and your goals seem to come alive much quicker and more vibrantly. Besides, it feels good. Helping others can range from anything – from sharing knowledge and wisdom, giving some of your time, or allocating a percentage of sales or income to giving back. What goes around comes around.

  5. Make FUN your motto! Laugh, dance, giggle, be silly. Don’t take life too seriously; nobody gets out alive anyway. Laugh. Be silly. Dance. Forgive. Let loose a little, and smile more too! When you smile, the world smiles back at you.
  6. Find your support. Of course you can do it on your own but the fun and effectiveness doubles when you do it with a group of supportive people. People who are holding you accountable, and who you’re holding accountable too. Hold each others’ feet and root one another on.
  7. Count every little blessings. It’s easy to get sidetracked when we lead busy lives. Say please and thank you, and really mean it. Recall what you’re thankful for at the end of each day. See life’s little joys as blessings. Live in the now.
  8. With all these tips in mind, go ahead and plan yourself an amazing New Year’s Eve. It is a celebration of new beginnings so make it a special day! Whether you’re joining a public countdown, spending a quiet evening with your loved ones, or even have an introspective time alone, mark the transition in a significant way so you can feel the excitement and joy of a new beginning.

HAVE AN AMAZING 2016!
