Baby monitors – Your extra pair of eyes and ears

A wireless radio system that can help you stay aware of your baby’s safety, a baby monitor alerts you to times when your child is crying or needs your help. It also comes in handy when you need to keep tabs of more than one child, on elderly who needs care or a pet that needs to be observed.

Here are some of the features to look out for when shopping for a baby monitor:

Batteries
For greater flexibility, go for something that operates on rechargeable batteries and mains power in the parent unit. If it doesn’t and run on non-rechargeable batteries, be sure to ask how long they can last.

Audio/video parent unit
Video baby monitor comes with a colour LCD video screen in the handheld unit so you can watch your baby anywhere within the house. Go for something with a greater range, especially if your house is big.

Volume control
An essential feature, the volume control is usually located on the side.

Expandability
Some monitors allow you to add up to four cameras. This is practical especially if you want to cover more areas in your house.

Frequency band
Look for the printed stickers for their band information choose a model that uses a different frequency band from the wireless products in your home. Some adapt the DECT technology, a frequency reserved exclusively for voice-only applications.

Night vision
Through its infrared light feature, many audio/video monitors allow clear view even in the dark.

Other nice-to-haves
Some models have other functions such as a temperature sensor, motion/sound sensor, night light, out-of-range indicator, an extra receiver unit and connectivity to other viewing devices such as the TV.
