Buzz Off – Essentials to Prevent Insect & Mosquito Bites

With the rise of Zika and dengue fever cases and the year-round tropical humidity, Malaysia is a fertile ground for insects, bugs and mosquitoes. While outdoor activities and exploring the nature with kids promote bonding and a love for nature, it is essential to be prepared when going out.

Among the things we can do to prevent insect and mosquito bites during outings include:

  • Wear long sleeves shirts, long pants and hat. Tuck in your pants and wear closed shoes if possible. High-tech athletic apparel and clothing that offers sun protection often have sufficiently tight weave to block bites.
  • Choose light-coloured clothing. Mosquitoes are thought to be attracted to warm bodies, so staying cool is one way to avoid bites.
  • Pick a breezy spot for your outing.
  • Avoid standing water such as lakes and swamps as they are mosquito and insect havens, especially during hot months.
  • Avoid peak mosquito hours when the sun rises and sets.
  • Plug in fans directed at the lower half of your body as mosquitoes tend to fly very close to the ground to avoid wind.
  • Use a combination of mosquito-repelling essential oils such as lemon eucalyptus, citronella, thyme, geranium and lavender in the diffuser for use in the patio or indoors.
  • Sleep with a net over your bed, especially if there’s a dengue fever case in your residential area. For babies, use a netting with an elastic edge for a tight fit.
  • Don’t waste money on an electric-hanging bug “zapper.” These have been shown to kill many bugs very effectively but generally the bugs killed are the non-harmful ones.
  • Don’t let water stand near your home or campsite. It’s easy to unintentionally create habitats for mosquitoes to live and breed in. For instance, a kiddy pool left out in the summer sun for several days can soon become a hotbed for mosquitoes. Get rid of any standing water around your home or campsite. If you have a pool, cover it when it’s not in use and treat the water with chemical additives like chlorine according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Water can also accumulate in discarded tires or industrial containers, construction ditches or trenches, natural low points on a piece of property and clogged storm drains.

8 Things You Didn’t Know About Baby Sleep

Some babies sleep well from day one, some are light sleepers and seem to prefer being active more. One thing for sure, it is not a natural, innate ability for babies to fall asleep on their own.

We have compiled eight fascinating facts about baby sleep every new parent should know:

  1. Babies are not born to fall asleep on their own, let alone sleep through the night. They need to be parented to sleep, not just put to sleep. Some babies can be put down while drowsy yet still awake while others need parental help by being rocked or nursed to sleep.
  2. Babies have a shorter sleep cycle and usually start stirring an hour after they go to sleep. Some need help getting back to sleep while the rest may self-soothe themselves back into a deep sleep. Help your baby by laying a hand on your baby’s back, patting him lightly or singing a lullaby.
  3. Let your baby enjoy plenty of daylight and avoid strong lights at night to distinguish between day and night. This will also help to regulate the production of melatonin, the sleep inducing hormone naturally released by our bodies.
  4. Babies’ light sleep actually has significance. In the first few months, it allows hunger to wake baby up and get the sustenance she needs.
  5. Your baby’s sleep habits are more a reflection of your baby’s temperament rather than your style of nighttime parenting. It’s not your fault baby wakes up.
  6. There’ no use trying to deprive your baby of sleep during daytime to make him sleep better at night. A well-rested baby falls asleep more easily and better at night than a baby who isn’t.
  7. There’s no proof that adding rice cereal to a bedtime bottle can help baby sleep through the night. In fact, doing this too early can be unsafe. Babies might not be able to digest rice cereal before 4 months of age.
  8. Painful stimuli such as colds and teething pain as well as major developmental milestones can keep babies awake, even after they have achieved adult-like sleep patterns. Between one and two years of age, other causes of nightwaking include separation anxiety and nightmares.

How To Choose The Right Stroller

Stokke Xplory

Buying a stroller is like buying a car – you know you need it, but the models, features and options available can make the process rather complicated. For instance, there are the multi-terrain strollers for jogging and adventure, lightweight strollers and travel systems. There are also the umbrella types and double-seated ones. With endless choices and extras, finding the ideal stroller can be overwhelming.

A quality strolling option will not only serve you for years, but also works well for multiple kids, or as a hand-me-down to from friends and relatives. Many factors combine to make this particular purchase a highly personal one, but take heart – the following tips can help you choose the best ride for your baby.

  • BUDGET. Before you begin your search, work out a budget first. As a stroller gets used so often for such a long time – from newborn to 3+ years – it’s wiser to spend a little bit extra to get exactly what you need from the start.
  • PURPOSE. Decide what and where you will be mainly using your stroller for. If you enjoy running or walking regularly with your baby, then consider a stroller that’s suitable for all-terrain. If you’re looking for something to keep in the car boot for use around the shopping malls, you may want to invest in an umbrella stroller. For frequent travellers, it’s worth considering a lightweight and compact stroller. If the idea of transferring your baby straight from the car into the stroller is appealing, a travel system – a stroller with a compatible infant car seat that clips onto the stroller – is the answer. Alternatively, a stroller with a universal frame lets you attach your car seat to it without waking up your baby, and once baby outgrows the car seat, you can decide on replacing it with another wider, child seat.

  • MANEUVERABILITY. It’s essential for your stroller to be easy to maneuver, especially when it is going to be filled with a baby and groceries. Look for one that can be pushed forward, pulled backward and turned around easily, possibly one which has four-way wheels. Put your child in the stroller and go for a test-drive around the store. It should feel smooth and easy to manage. Remember that your child will grow heavier, hence durability must be taken into account too.
  • FEATURES. Run through the features of each shortlisted stroller. Do they come with umbrellas or shades, cup and snack holders? Are the harness straps and buckles easy to adjust, comfortable for kids? Does it have locking rear wheels and completely reclining seat positions? Is the fabric removable and washable? If this is your first stroller and you’re planning on having more children, it’s a good idea to look at models that have the ability to have additional seat or a stand-on board installed later. It’s also important to check that neither parent will struggle with the weight, size and height of the stroller when pushing or lifting it.

With a baby in tow, you will have more things to carry with you. Add on a couple of shopping bags and you might find yourself very quickly out of hands – so it’s good to consider strollers that have a bigger storage space

Is it also easy to be collapsed or folded? The last thing you need when your child is crying is to be standing in a busy car park trying to collapse a stroller with a myriad of levers and buttons!

  • SAFETY. As with all strollers, you should look for one that is approved and has been put through stringent safety testing procedures. Check up the web for any product recalls of your shortlisted strollers to make sure they are completely safe and approved.
