Money-Saving Shopping Tips

Hello December, the month of festivities and gift giving. With the ongoing Malaysia Year-End Sale, there’s no better time to shop and get the best deal for your Ringgit. We share some savvy shopping strategies to help you get the most for your money.

  1. Shop with a list. You only save if you buy something that you need. Most people tend to overspend or buy things they don’t need and never end up using just because there’s a markdown on the item. Before you set off on your shopping trip, review what you already have, what you’ll need and  refer to the list when you shop! Most importantly, stick to the list.
  2. Set a budget. Yes, oh yes – the “b” word. Budget. Determine a ballpark figure on what you are going to spend for the items you’re after.  Set your budget, make sure you don’t buy more than you can afford and be disciplined about it.
  3. Consider time and travel costs. If an item is on sale, but it’s way across town, how much are you really saving once you factor in your time, your transportation, and parking.
  4. Use vouchers. Have you accumulated many reward points in your credit card from your year-long shopping? This is the time to convert the points into shopping vouchers. Find out what your bank offers, redeem the points and check out the offerings of participating retailers. Some cards also award additional points for shopping at partner retailers. Always read that fine print!
  5. Pick your day. The day of the week actually has a lot to do with how good of a deal you’re getting. For instance, Sunday is the best day to buy airfare, while other online retailers tend to release offers on Wednesday and Thursday for their products.list-of-the-top-best-shopping-malls-in-dubai-uae
  6. Go online. Check out websites to compare prices between those sold online and those sold in physical stores. Due to the lower costs of operation, some items may be much cheaper online. If you decide to buy online, keep delivery costs and  time in mind.
  7. Use social media / sign up for email alerts: “Like” your favourite retailers on Facebook and Instagram, or sign up for their newsletters. Many merchants post special coupons or announce sales first on their social media and emails.
  8. Clear your browsing data. You’ve probably noticed when you’re initially searching for flights if you don’t purchase and come back a day or two later to buy, the price increases! While that could just be because the price went up, it’s most likely because you were “cookied” and served a higher price. By clearing your browser data, you can avoid this price jack-up.
  9. Visit retailer’s website first: Several brands offer online coupons and promotional codes on their websites. So, it’s always good to visit the site before physically visiting the store.
  10. Be patient: If you don’t need an item right away, it pays to check back daily over a two-week period to see if an item goes on sale. And when you do see a good deal, jump on it—it often won’t last long!

Let’s get some shopping done!
